The opportunity of warehousing.
Out of pure curiosity I typed ‘warehousing’ into seek. No location or classification to specify my search. I wanted to see how many jobs were being advertised on seek alone in the warehousing industry. WELL, I was pretty surprised to be perfectly honest. 4723 jobs. YES four thousand seven hundred and twenty three jobs available in Australia on one of our biggest job hunt search engines. EPIC.
The Queensland Training Information Service (let’s just stick to QTIS) is a place to ”search for information on apprenticeships and traineeships approved for delivery in Queensland, including details on supporting courses and qualifications, restricted callings and preferred suppliers”.
Not all ‘traineeships’ are equal. So if you’re going to be putting your time and effort into doing once, it is important to ensure it is the real deal. No one has time to waste time right?
If you’re reading this and thinking ‘oh yeah that’s sort cool – but what the heck is warehousing’ – let us break it down a bit for you.
Warehousing is just ‘an arm’ of the wider integrated logistics industry. According to Ibis World, “this sector provide logistics, transport, storage, handling, distribution and other support services to transport companies as part of third-party vertically integrated supply networks. The sector does not include bulk freight services, which are typically provided by water freight transport and rail freight transport operators”.
Essentially this industry is HUGE and provides works to 100’s of 1000’s of Australian’s. The other great thing about getting into the area of warehousing specifically; is that there is plenty of opportunity out there to get in ‘green’ with absolutely no experience. Jobs like this would include roles like pick packing and process work, which typically involve manual labour and the need of some basic computer skills. Many work places take employee’s through traineeship programs through registered training suppliers off their own backs to upskill their workers and build a more solid team within the workplace. This would likely be a certificate in warehousing operations, or a certificate in logistics; some employers may even offer the opportunity to do both qualifications.
Many of the advertised warehousing positions do find it preferable for candidates to hold some or all of these licences/tickets: drivers licence, forklift licence, order picker licence, MR licence.
